God Is Righteous, Holy, and Faithful
When we ask, “What is God like?”, Scripture gives us many answers. But three words give us a powerful picture of His character: God is righteous. God is holy. And God is faithful. We have been looking at the basic truths about God that shape, or should shape, everything we believe about the world, about people, and about ourselves.
Here are three:
God Is Righteous
Psalm 145:17 says, “The LORD is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does.” God always does what is right. We sometimes struggle to know what is right. Our judgment can be clouded by our emotions, our desires, our fears, or our limited understanding. But God never has that problem. God never makes a moral mistake. He never acts unjustly. He never looks back and says, “I should have handled that differently.”
That matters when life does not make sense. There will be times when we do not understand what God is doing. We may not understand why He allowed something, why He didn’t prevent something, or why He has not answered a prayer the way we hoped. In those moments, faith says, “I may not understand what God is doing, but I know the character of the One who is doing it. God is righteous.”
God Is Holy
Isaiah saw a vision of God upon His throne and heard the angels calling: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty.” —Isaiah 6:3
God’s holiness means that He is completely pure and completely separate from everything sinful and evil. There is no darkness in Him. No corruption. No selfishness. No hidden agenda. God’s holiness reminds us that He is not simply a bigger and better version of us. He is God. And when we begin to see His holiness, we begin to see ourselves differently. Isaiah’s response was: “Woe to me! … For I am a man of unclean lips.”
The holiness of God exposes our sin. But wonderfully, God does not reveal our sin merely to condemn us. He reveals it so that He can cleanse us. That is why the gospel is such good news. The holy God has made a way for sinful people to come into His presence through Jesus Christ. At the cross, God’s holiness and God’s love meet. Our sin is taken seriously, but sinners are offered grace.
Finally, God is faithful.
Lamentations 3:22–23 says: “His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
We live in a world where people disappoint us. Promises are broken. Relationships change. Circumstances change. And sometimes we even disappoint ourselves. But God does not change. God’s faithfulness means that He can be trusted to be tomorrow exactly who He is today. He keeps His promises. He remains faithful to His covenant. He does not abandon His children.
“If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.” —2 Timothy 2:13
We stumble. He remains faithful. We become afraid. He remains faithful. We sometimes wander. He remains faithful. And when we repent and return, we discover that His mercy is still there—new every morning.
Because God is righteous, I can trust His decisions.
Because God is holy, I can trust His character.
Because God is faithful, I can trust His promises.
And perhaps that is exactly what someone needs to remember today. You may not know what tomorrow holds. You may not understand everything God is doing in your life. You may even be walking through circumstances that cause you to ask, “God, where are You in all of this?” But you can know with David, “The LORD is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does.”
God is righteous. God is holy. God is faithful. And, God is worthy of our trust.
