11/20/23 MondayMatters: The Discipline of Thanksgiving

Like all attitudes, the attitude of gratitude is a choice. I can decide and then practice being thankful. Here are 7 keys to practicing Thanksgiving this holiday season.

1. Decide to be thankful. I Thessalonians 5:18 says it’s God’s will for us and He is not going to command us to do something that we cannot do.

2. Start early. Begin each day expressing your thankfulness to God for ALL He has done.

3. Start small. Don’t wait for some overwhelming blessing. Make a list of all the “small” things you have to be grateful for and begin there.

4. Be thankful out loud. Let your conversation be saturated with thankfulness and gratitude.

5. Pay lots of compliments. Be thankful to God but also to everyone around you. And tell them why.

6. Make Thanksgiving sandwiches. Before and after any complaint, be thankful. Paul says, “Don’t be anxious, but be thankful.” Philippians 4:8.

7. End the day with gratefulness. Rehearse at the end of the day all of the ways God has blessed you on that day. And there are many.

Remember Colossians 4:2, “Devote yourself to prayer and thanksgiving.”
